NEFT vs RTGS: Which Transfer Mode Should You Use?
The Core Difference in Settlement
NEFT uses deferred net settlement transactions are batched together and settled in aggregate cycles throughout the day. RTGS uses real-time gross settlement each transaction is processed individually the moment it is received, with no batching. This architectural difference determines which system is better for which situation.
Amount Thresholds
NEFT has no minimum and no system-level maximum. It is appropriate for any amount from 1 upward. RTGS has a minimum of 2 lakh per transaction. This hard floor means RTGS is not an option for small or medium transfers it exists specifically for large-value payments where individual real-time settlement provides certainty.
Speed Comparison
RTGS credits the beneficiary within 30 minutes in practice, often within seconds. NEFT also operates 24x7 but uses a batch mechanism that can mean a settlement cycle of 30 minutes to a few hours depending on when the instruction is submitted. For a 10 lakh payment that a supplier needs confirmed before dispatching goods, RTGS provides more reliable timing.
Cost and Availability
Both NEFT and RTGS are available 24x7 since 20192020. RBI has directed that NEFT and RTGS should be free for savings account holders. Corporate and current account holders may still be charged by their individual banks. Charges for RTGS are typically slightly higher than NEFT due to the dedicated settlement infrastructure.
Which to Use and When
Use NEFT for routine transfers under 2 lakh, salary disbursements, utility payments, or any situation where immediate credit is not critical. Use RTGS when the amount is 2 lakh or above and immediate real-time settlement is important property purchases, legal settlements, high-value vendor payments, and inter-company treasury transfers are typical RTGS use cases.
Why the Distinction Still Matters With UPI
Many people assume UPI has made NEFT and RTGS obsolete. UPI applies to amounts up to 1 lakh per transaction for most users and is primarily a retail consumer rail. NEFT and RTGS are interbank wholesale rails used extensively by businesses, corporates, and banks themselves for bulk and high-value settlements. They operate at a different scale and for different purposes than UPI.
