Upi Handle Explained
What Is a UPI Handle?
A UPI handle—officially a Virtual Payment Address (VPA)—is your unique identifier in the NPCI UPI system. It looks like yourname@bankcode. Anyone can send you money using just this address; they need no account number or IFSC.
Common Bank Handle Codes
| Handle | Bank / PSP |
|---|---|
| @sbi | State Bank of India (BHIM SBI Pay) |
| @okaxis / @okhdfcbank / @oksbi / @okicici | Google Pay |
| @ybl | Yes Bank via PhonePe |
| @paytm | Paytm Payments Bank |
| @axl | Axis Bank |
| @ibl | IndusInd Bank |
How VPA Links to Your Bank Account
When you set up UPI, you link it to your bank account by verifying your debit card. The VPA is registered against your account number and IFSC in the NPCI central mapper. When someone sends to your VPA, NPCI resolves it to your underlying account and routes the payment via IMPS. You can link one VPA to multiple accounts and set a default.
When a VPA Is Not Sufficient
- NACH mandate registration—requires IFSC + account number + MICR, not VPA
- Payroll batch files—require IFSC + account number per employee
- Government scheme registration—DBT portals need Aadhaar-linked account
- International remittances—require SWIFT code and full account details
