Verify Branch Before Transfer Use Case

Step 1: Look Up the IFSC on Bank Utils

Enter the IFSC. If it returns the expected bank name, branch name, and city, the code is active. "Not found" means invalid or expired. If the bank name shown differs from what the beneficiary told you, stop and investigate.

Step 2: Cross-Check With a Bank-Printed Document

For any first-time payee or transfer above ₹10,000, request: (1) a cancelled cheque—IFSC is pre-printed at top right, (2) the first page of their passbook, or (3) a bank letter on letterhead. The IFSC from a bank-printed source is the authoritative reference.

Step 3: Run Penny-Drop to Confirm the Name

Add the beneficiary in your net banking. After entering IFSC + account number, the app displays the registered account holder name. If it does not match your intended recipient, do not proceed without direct clarification on a known phone number.

Step 4: Check for Merged Bank Codes

If the first 4 characters match any expired prefix—VIJB, BKDN, ANDB, CORP, ALLA, ORBC, UTBI, SYNB—the code belongs to a merged bank and may be deactivated. Look up the current IFSC under the acquiring bank's name.
